The National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) recently met with Lisa Smart, Liberal Democrat MP for Hazel Grove, at a local dealership to discuss key issues. The meeting provided an opportunity to highlight the challenges facing the sector as the industry transitions to zero-emission vehicles and to discuss the potential impact of the UK’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate. During the visit, NFDA representatives discussed several key issues, including: The recent policy shift by the European Union, which has moved from a proposed 100% phase-out of combustion engine vehicles to a 90% emissions reduction target by 2035. The fact that the EU remains the UK’s largest automotive export market, meaning policy developments in Europe have significant implications for UK manufacturers and retailers. Concerns that vehicle manufacturers may begin limiting the supply of hybrid and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to the UK in order to meet ZEV Mandate targets. Developments in the United States, the UK’s second-largest export market, where some policies aimed at accelerating electric vehicle adoption have recently been reversed. The potential risk to dealership profitability and local employment if vehicle supply to the UK becomes constrained. If manufacturers begin limiting vehicle supply to the UK to meet ZEV Mandate targets, this could have a direct impact on dealership profitability and ultimately local employment. This is why it is important that the UK Government reviews the ZEV Mandate to ensure it supports a sustainable transition for businesses, consumers and the wider automotive sector.”
