Speaking on the sidelines at the UN General Assembly, President Trump called on a halt in American diesel exports in an effort to ease prices at the pump. This comes after average diesel prices surpassed $6.50 (£4.87) per gallon.

With ongoing conflict in the Middle East, global oil prices have been continually constrained, putting further pressure on pump prices. The surge in pump prices sparked political urgency prior to the crucial mid-term elections on 3 November.
