New car registrations in the EU rose by 0.8% in 2024, reaching approximately 10.6 million units , showing modest growth despite mixed performances across major markets. Spain stood out with a strong 7.1% growth , while France, Germany, and Italy saw declines of – 3.2% , – 1% , and – 0.5% , respectively. December brought a more optimistic close to the year, with EU-wide registrations increasing 5.1% . Spain once again led the charge with an impressive 28.8% rise , while France posted a smaller 1.5% gain . However, Germany and Italy faced significant drops of – 7.1% and – 4.9% . Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) continued to gain traction, securing a 13.6% market share for 2024, overtaking diesel, which fell to 11.9% . BEV registrations for December fell by – 10.2% , with Germany and France recording sharp declines of – 38.6% and – 20.7% , respectively. Over the year, BEV market volumes declined by – 5.9% compared to 2023. Hybrid-electric cars continued to grow, ending the year with a 30.9% market share . In December, hybrid registrations surged by 33.1% , outperforming petrol cars for the fourth consecutive month. Meanwhile, petrol cars retained the largest share for the year at 33.3% , despite a – 1.8% decline in December. Diesel cars continued their downward trend, with market share dropping to 9.8% last month. Despite challenges, the automotive market saw a shift toward electrified vehicles, with hybrids and BEVs gaining momentum, even as traditional powertrains faced declining demand.
