In welcome news for the Chancellor, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has reported that inflation remained unchanged in September at 3.8%, ahead of the forthcoming Autumn Budget. Economists had forecast a rise to 4%, but the figure held steady from August’s level, prompting renewed speculation about the Bank of England’s next interest rate decision on 6 November and whether a further rate cut may be on the table. The Chancellor Rachel Reeves MP commented: “I am not satisfied with these numbers. For too long, our economy has felt stuck, with people feeling like they are putting in more and getting less out. That needs to change. All of us in government are responsible for supporting the Bank of England in bringing inflation down.” The Chancellor has said she would announce new policies in the upcoming budget to “bear down” on some of the costs that people faced.
