The UK used car market maintained its upward trajectory in 2025, with total transactions rising to 7,807,872 units, representing a 2.2% increase compared with the previous year. This marks the third consecutive year of growth, driven by improving new car supply and robust consumer demand, particularly for electric vehicles. Electric Vehicle Sales Surge Used electric vehicle (EV) sales accelerated sharply in 2025, reflecting growing interest in low-emission motoring. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) recorded a 45.7% increase, with 274,815 units changing hands and pushing BEVs to a 3.5% share of the used car market, up from 2.5% in 2024. Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales rose 6.3% to 88,032 units, while hybrid models increased 28.6% to 407,531 units. Overall, used electrified vehicle transactions jumped 30.9% to 770,378 units, accounting for nearly 10% of all used car sales. Traditional Fuel Types Still Dominate Despite the rise of electrified vehicles, petrol and diesel models continue to dominate the used market, comprising 89.9% of all sales. Petrol vehicles remained the most popular fuel type, increasing 1.5% to 56.7% market share, while diesel volumes declined 3.5% to 33.1%.
