Burnham warns of ‘challenging’ Budget ahead as UK inflation increased to 3.1%

UK inflation rose to 3.1% in August, up from 2.9% in July, with higher petrol and diesel prices making the largest contribution to the increase. 

The rise comes ahead of the Budget on 28 October, with Prime Minister Andy Burnham describing the economic backdrop as “challenging” amid continued pressure on household costs and wider global uncertainty.
