“The UK Government’s latest funding package to support the transition to zero emission commercial vehicles, including continued plug-in grants for vans and trucks and increased investment in charging infrastructure is a positive move,” said Sue Robinson, Chief Executive of the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA). The Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed that the plug-in van grant will continue to offer discounts of up to £5,000, while the plug-in truck grant will provide savings of up to £81,000 for the heaviest zero emission trucks, covering up to 40% of the purchase cost. In addition, businesses and public sector organisations installing charging infrastructure for vans, coaches and electric heavy goods vehicles will be able to access increased support through a £170 million boost to the government’s Depot Charging Scheme, covering up to 70% of installation costs. These measures aim to tackle key barriers to zero emission vehicle adoption, including upfront costs and charging access, while reducing exposure to fuel price volatility. Sue Robinson added “The Government’s continued commitment to supporting the uptake of zero emission vans and trucks is a vital and necessary step for the commercial vehicle sector. “The extension of grants alongside increased funding for depot charging infrastructure will help give businesses greater confidence to invest in electric fleets, particularly at a time when cost pressures and fuel price volatility remain key concerns. “While this support is very welcome, it is essential that it is complemented by further measures to accelerate the transition, including improvements to grid capacity and the rollout of dedicated commercial vehicle charging infrastructure, to ensure operators across the UK can make the switch effectively and sustainably.”
