The UK light commercial vehicle (LCV) market made a weak start to 2026, with January registrations down 7.8% year on year to 17,562 units, according to the latest SMMT figures. Pick-up sales saw the steepest drop, falling 57% after a surge in early 2025 linked to benefit-in-kind tax changes. Small and medium van segments also declined, but larger vans between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes grew by 10%, a sign of confidence from major fleet operators. Electric van demand improved, with battery electric LCV registrations up 22.3% to 1,639 units, giving EVs a 10.4% market share. However, diesel still dominates, accounting for more than 80% of registrations. Sue Robinson, Chief Executive of the NFDA, said the market remains in transition and warned that current EV demand is well below ZEV mandate targets, calling for greater confidence and incentives to support electrification.
