Government is considering tougher penalties for illegal or altered number plates, including penalty points and vehicle seizure, as part of its Road Safety Strategy.
The DfT has confirmed that number plates are already visually checked during MOT tests, while the DVLA is exploring tighter oversight of number plate suppliers and new technology to help police detect plates designed to evade cameras.
