The beginning of Q2 2025 has seen a slight improvement from last month. In April 2025, new registrations are were up from March’s -0.2% and has increased by 1.3% year-on-year. Battery-electric vehicle (BEVs) accounted for 15.3% market share in April, up 0.1%. Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) have continued to grow as the most popular option amongst consumers. HEVs contributed a significant percentage, seeing 35.3% of the market, a clear indication that more European consumers are veering towards hybrids. From January to April, new battery-electric car sales grew by 26.4%, to 558,262 units. Germany (+42.8%), Belgium (+31.3%), and the Netherlands (+6.4%) were the major contributors for the significant uptake. Meanwhile, France saw a decline of -4.4%. April 2025’s year to date (YTD) figures also showed new EU registrations of hybrid-electric cars rising by 20.8%, driven by significant growth in the four biggest markets: France (44.9%), Spain (35.8%), Italy (15%), and Germany (11%). This led to 1,285,486 units being registered. Plug-in-hybrid electric cars grew by 7.8% in April 2025 YTD, to a total of 287,850 units. This was driven by increases in Germany (46.6%) and Spain (42.8%). As a result, plug-in-hybrid electric cars now represent 7.9% of total car registrations in the EU. Finally, petrol and diesel registrations decreased from 48.4% to 38.2%. By the end of April 2025, petrol car registrations saw a significant decline of -20.6%, with all major markets showing decreases. France especially fell by -35.2%, whilst the other saw a downturn: Germany (-26.6%), Italy (-14.4%), and Spain (-12.7%). For more information please refer to the ACEA figures here
