New EU car registrations have continued to show signs of recovery following Q1’s decline. In May 2025 new registrations were up 1.6% year on year, according to the latest ACEA figures. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) have maintained steady growth, up 0.1%, accounting for 15.4% of the market share. Meanwhile, hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) remain the most popular option for consumers, holding a 35.1% market share. However, this is slightly down from April by -0.2%. From January to May, BEV sales reached 701,089 units. Germany (43.2%), Belgium (26.7%), and the Netherlands (6.7%) were the major contributors for the uptake whilst France’s figures continued decline, down -7.1%. Impressively, registrations of hybrid-electric cars rose to 1,601,090 units, driven by strong growth in the four largest markets: Germany (11%), France (44.9%), Spain (35.8%) and Italy (15%). Registrations of plug-in-hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) reached 375,182 units in May. Finally, petrol and diesel registrations both significantly declined, down -20.2% and -26.6% respectively, further underscoring Europe’s shift towards electrification.
