The Government seems to have been in some turbulent times recently, with Deputy Leader Angela Rayner resigning, the dismissal of Peter Mandelson as Ambassador to the USA, media talks of Andy Burnham coming for No. 10, and a cabinet reshuffle. However, despite some last-minute conference changes to many of the events due to the reshuffle, the atmosphere at conference was good and Starmer seems secure with his base. Recent YouGov polling had 60% of the Labour party viewing Starmer and Reeves as having carried out a good job so far. Public opinion however, still has him polling very low. Starmer officially recognised Reform as the new opposition in his speech and pitted that the next election would be a fight between Labour and Reform “for the soul of the U.K”. New Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced reforms to “indefinite leave to remain”, stating that migrants have to earn the right to settlement in the UK. Also announced was the replacement of a target for 50% of young people to attend university, with a new target which includes apprenticeships. The Chancellor was confident during her speech, however, did not offer much on the future tax policy ahead of the upcoming budget. Tax rises seem likely. NFDA attended a talk on the current Car finance situation, with Dame Meg Hillier, Chair of the Treasury Select Committee, speaking on the current situation. NFDA also attended a fringe event, hosted by High Streets UK, and heard from Sarah Jones MP, Police and Crime Minister, to talk about introducing a new law to protect retail workers from abuse, which will include those working in vehicle dealerships.
