The latest SMMT Electrified event brought together industry leaders to discuss the evolving landscape of the ZEV Mandate and the transition to net zero in the automotive sector. Key topics included speculation on the outcome of the ZEV Mandate consultation, with several references to the possibility of softened targets and a potential extension of the current timeline. Notably, in attendance was Lilian Greenwood MP, the Future Roads Minister. OEMs highlighted concerns about the impact of the upcoming Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) implementation on retail consumers, set for 1st April, and called for a review of the Electric Car Scheme (ECS). They argued that the current £40K threshold is too low, affecting the majority of available EV models. As NFDA awaits the Government’s response to the consultation, there is broad industry consensus that further incentives are needed to boost consumer adoption of retail EVs.
