The NFDA continues to keep members informed of key regulatory developments impacting the automotive retail sector. As part of this, Sue Robinson, Chief Executive of the NFDA, emphasised the importance of staying ahead of change: “Keeping our members informed and prepared for regulatory change is a key priority for the NFDA. As the landscape continues to evolve, we are committed to providing timely updates and practical guidance to support members.” One important upcoming change is the regulation of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) finance, due to come into force from July 2026. As regulation approaches, some lenders have begun informing dealers that they may be classified as an “introducer” under the new regulatory framework. As a result, dealerships offering or facilitating BNPL products may fall within scope depending on their role in the customer journey. Members should therefore carefully consider how BNPL is presented and introduced to customers within their sales process. In particular, businesses should remain mindful of their responsibilities under Consumer Duty, ensuring that customers receive clear information, are able to make informed decisions and experience fair outcomes when considering finance options. Dealers should be confident that their processes support good customer understanding and avoid any potential customer harm. The NFDA is currently seeking legal guidance on behalf of members to better understand the implications of these changes and will provide further updates in due course.
