Another month of growth would be an encouraging sign for the new car market, particularly as the sector enters an important period for registrations. Sustaining consumer demand will be crucial as the market continues its transition towards zero-emission vehicles,’ said Sue Robinson, Chief Executive of National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA), which represents franchised car and commercial vehicle retailers across the UK.

According to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 94,236 new units were registered in August, an increase of 13.7%.

Registrations to private buyers rose by 19.0%, while fleet registrations increased by 10.1%.

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations rose by 27.7%, accounting for 29.8% of the new car market. Plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) registrations increased by 39.8%, while hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) registrations rose by 26.3%.

The latest registration figures come as the Government consults on the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate, with the data providing an important indication of the pace of consumer demand as the sector works towards the Government’s zero-emission targets.

Robinson added:

The latest figures demonstrate the progress being made, but maintaining that momentum will depend on consumers having the confidence and means to make the switch.

‘NFDA is responding to the Government’s ZEV Mandate consultation on a framework that reflects market conditions, supports consumer choice and affordability and provides a sustainable route forward for franchised retailers.
