Andy Burnham officially took office yesterday and announced his new cabinet. Please find below some of the announcements that are relevant to our industry. We will be sending letters to the new ministers to introduce ourselves and raise the key concerns of our industry. The Treasury Chancellor of the Exchequer – John Healey – The former Defence Secretary, who resigned his position over concerns that Defence spending was not sufficient, was surprisingly announced as the new Chancellor replacing Rachel Reeves. He has been an MP since 1997 and held numerous junior ministerial positions during the last Labour government. Department for Transport Secretary of State for Transport – Heidi Alexander – Heidi Alexander remains in post as Secretary of State for Transport a post which she has held since September 2024. We have been in regular contact with her most recently regarding the ZEV mandate and the planned review. We look forward to continued engagement at a vital time. Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation – Keir Mather – Keir Mather remains in post as the minister responsible for decarbonisation including the ZEV mandate. We are in regular contact with Keir most recently in relation to bringing forward the review into the mandate. He attended our parliamentary dinner in January and spoke with members about their concerns. Department for Business and Trade Secretary of State for Business and Trade – Jonathan Reynolds – Jonathan Reynolds returns as Secretary of State for Business and Trade, a position he held for the first year of the Labour government replacing Peter Kyle. We had been in contact with both Jonathan Reynolds and Peter Kyle on issues regarding the mandate as well as member concerns around business rates. We look forward to rebuilding our relationship with Jonathan Reynolds and demonstrating the importance of the automotive industry to the British economy. Department for Work and Pensions Secretary of State for Work and Pensions – Pat McFadden – Pat McFadden remains in post as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, a position he has held since September last year. We have been in contact with him regarding reforming the Apprenticeship Levy with powers on apprenticeships having been transferred to his department from the Department for Education. We will continue to engage positively with him on this important issue. Department for Energy and Net Zero Secretary of State for Energy and Net Zero – Miatta Fahnbulleh – Replacing Ed Miliband as Secretary of State for Energy and Net Zeo is Miatta Fahnbulleh. This is a major promotion with her only previous roles being junior positions in the Department for Energy and the Department for Housing. Miatta is part of the 2024 intake of new Labour MPs. She has a background in the Civil Service and think tanks including working in the policy unit in the Cabinet Office. We look forward to working positively with her on issues surrounding the mandate and the electric transition. Northern Ireland Office Secretary of State for Northern Ireland – Sir Chris Bryant – Replacing Hilary Benn who had been Secretary of State since Labour came to power is Sir Chris Bryant. An MP since 2001, Sir Chris has served in a variety of junior ministerial positions in both the current and previous Labour governments. Most recently he served as Minister of State for Trade in the Department for Business and Trade. We had been in regular contact with Hilary Benn on issues of great importance to our Northern Irish members including GB Type Approval and the MOT backlog issue. This included an in-person meeting with him in Westminster. We look forward to engaging further with his successor on these and other issues. Other notable changes Ed Milliband has taken over as Foreign Secretary from Yvette Cooper who has been moved to Health Secretary. Shabana Mahmood remains in post as Home Secretary and Wes Streeting has become Defence Secretary. Bridget Phillipson has been moved to Minister for Women and Equalities as Lucy Powell takes over as Education Secretary. Angela Rayner and Louise Haigh both return to the cabinet as Housing and Local Government Secretary and First Secretary of State (similar to Deputy Prime Minister) respectively. The Department for Science and Technology has been scrapped and AI Minister, Kanishka Narayan has been given a boosted role which will involve attending cabinet.
