Following reports that the Government is considering changes to moderate the current targets, NFDA has written to Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, Peter Kyle, regarding the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate. Our outreach focused on vans and Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs), expressing our concern that the current ZEV mandate for vans is unrealistic and unlikely to be met under current market conditions. We recommended that the Government remove the ZEV mandate for LCVs and instead allow the transition to be market-led. This would support the move to full electrification while avoiding serious unintended consequences for the businesses that rely on, operate, sell and manufacture vans. NFDA has consistently highlighted the challenges facing the van sector, including operational requirements, charging infrastructure limitations, vehicle affordability and the gap between customer demand and mandated targets. This letter is part of NFDA’s ongoing engagement with MPs and policymakers on the ZEV Mandate and the wider transition to electric vehicles, along with a recent meeting with Richard Tice, where these issues were discussed. Our letter was also sent to Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander, and the Chair of the Commons Business and Trade Committee, Liam Byrne; both of whom we have engaged with previously on these issues. We look forward to meeting Peter Kyle next month to discuss these concerns further and continue making the case for a realistic, achievable and business-focused approach to the transition to zero-emission commercial vehicles.
